An import rarely fails over money and often over one missing sheet of paper. Here is the route, step by step.
- From the seller: invoice or purchase contract, vehicle documents, and proof the car was deregistered in its country of origin.
- At customs: the import papers plus proof of origin. After valuation you pay duty, excise and VAT; keep the payment receipt.
- Technical inspection: the certificate must not be older than fifteen days when you hand it in.
- Insurance: the TPL policy must be in place before registration.
- Registration: with ID or passport, invoice, customs proof, inspection certificate and policy — within fifteen days of purchase.
Fifteen days is tight. Book the technical inspection as soon as the car is cleared, not when you happen to find time.
If you buy a car that is already cleared or carries RKS plates, the whole first part disappears. That is why many buyers take this route even at a slightly higher price.
